Instead of Roses and Rings is a wonderful love story about two men at a university. This is not a "smut" romance; there are no erotic scenes in this tender insider's look at the lives of men who prefer the company of other men.

From the moment they meet, Chris unknowingly haunts Alexis. Alexis sees things that lead him to believe Chris has the gift of sight, which intrigues him – but Alexis also fears an eerie paranormal connection between Chris's features and a long-dead lover.

Chris, oblivious to all of this, clumsily struggles to understand his sexuality and the new lifestyle without the assistance of someone to explain things to him or share his fears with. He adores Alexis so selflessly and without pride that it nearly destroys them both – but it ends up being their very salvation.'

Torn between emotional scars from the past and societal expectations, they struggle to keep their cool while dealing with these new and intense feelings. Leering and biassed opponents appear to lurk around every corner, but good-hearted friends provide them with the strength and counsel they need to move past misunderstandings and face the strong, confusing emotions that accompany the beginnings of love. These two men are from the same world, but have come from opposite ends of the spectrum – love quickly proves to be impervious to all such distinctions.

As a reviewer, I would be remiss if I did not point out the numerous grammatical errors in this book. Sentences were occasionally missing entire words or used the incorrect word (i.e. hear instead of here), and the author's use of incorrect punctuation detracted from my enjoyment of this story as a reader.

The dream sequences were some of the most original I'd ever read. The author chose to use no punctuation at all, which, once adjusted to, creates a real sense of the speed and flashing events that people experience in their dreams.
